This is an introductory module on research methods for social sciences. The module aims to provide students fundamental knowledge in major social research approaches. It explores several integrated methods of collecting and analysing quantitative and qualitative data so as to testify the validity of theories. It covers the logic of scientific inquiry and equips students with research techniques such as scientific sampling, survey, field studies, archival data, and qualitative analysis that are commonly used in political science, sociology and psychology research. Besides, this module also includes interdisciplinary research methods such as structured and unstructured observations and ethnographical research for humanities. The most important goal of the module is to provide students with sufficient understanding of research design so as to prepare them for conducting academic research in advanced level modules.
