This aspect of political economy includes redistribution, market failure, bureaucracy and regulatory bodies, and public finance, etc. Another aspect concerns about the influence of market on the government. It includes the politics of interest groups and lobbying, and other issues of state-market relationship.

We will start by investigating some classical definition of economics. Then, we’ll turn to a discussion of economic methodology, considering Milton Friedman’s positivism/instrumentalism and approaches influenced by the idea of falsification introduced by Karl Popper; we end this section with discussion of the question of whether economics is properly considered a science. Afterward, we will critically examine the idea of rationality. What is the meaning of the instrumental conception of rationality? Is the theory of rational choice a good idealization of what human reasoning is like? We will finish with an in-depth discussion of the relationship between ethics and economics and the role that values play — and ought or ought not to play — in economic reasoning.

It tries to answer questions such as these. “Why does society need a government?” “On what grounds, and to what extent can government be justified?” “Should individuals obey the state?” “What is a just distribution of economic resource?” This course will cover some of the historically prominent answers to these questions that combine theories of human nature, ethics, and social life. Special attention will be paid to some of the most important contemporary political philosophers such as Robert Nozick, John Rawls, and Michael Sandel.
