This module introduces students to major ethical theories and moral philosophy in the Western and Chinese traditions, for instance, Utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, Virtue ethics and Confucian ethics. It examines a wide range of ethical issues in contemporary society, politics and economy, such as liberty, equality, citizenship, social justice, economic justice, animal rights, climate change, public health, gender, bioethics and technoethics, etc. Students are required to learn how to analyse and evaluate relevant arguments by using the skills of critical thinking and ethical reasoning. The module aims to help students to develop their ability of moral reasoning, also enables them to articulate their ethical judgments, which connect those ethical theories as they learn in class to the challenges of moral issues in daily life.
