This module explores the role of emotions in the process of democratization. In particular, how emotions function in the defence of dictatorship, in the organization of civil disobedience against dictatorship, and in the establishment of the resilience of democracy will be discussed. In light of the latest scientific and philosophical researches of emotions, we investigate the following questions: What are political emotions? By what means do authoritarian governments manipulate emotions such as disgust and shame of the public, and why are these manipulations effective means to maintain their authority? What kinds of emotion serve as the best motivation for a long-term civil disobedience against dictatorship? Can emotions such as love and compassion help smooth the functioning of democratic politics and safeguard social justices?
